The very term “Rosacea” would seem to imply that it’s referring to someone with a red face – after all, one of the syllables comes from the word “rose”. But the fact is, rosacea symptoms come in all shapes and sizes. The ones you have will determine which of the types of rosacea you may be experiencing.
It’s important that you are correctly diagnosed with rosacea and not some other skin condition, otherwise the treatment you receive may not work – or worse still, exacerbate your symptoms. My rosacea was not identified until the first lot of treatment I received for acne, only appeared to work temporarily, but then it came back with a vengeance. A second opinion from another physician confirmed the rosacea diagnosis but until that time, I had never heard of rosacea.
So my journey of investigation and experimentation began.
Welcome to our Rosacea Symptoms Main Page
This page serves as an introductory one. Below, you will find a number of links to other articles on this site which deal with their particular topic in more depth. But they are all extensions of the primary concept – “Rosacea Symptoms“.
It is difficult to summarize what rosacea symptoms are in one sentence. The reason is, because there are different types of rosacea, each with their own set of symptoms. Yours may simply be a flushed red complexion, which possibly includes some spider-like veins on your face, which always seems to light up when you’re embarrassed, or experience more extreme weather conditions, or drink alcohol or hot beverages. This type of rosacea has been given a name by the medical profession. They call it Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea. Sounds complicated doesn’t it!
On the other hand, your rosacea symptoms may be easily mistaken for adult acne. You’re getting pimple-like papules and/or pustules on your nose, your forehead and across your cheek bones. If you have oily skin, you’re probably thinking that your teenage nightmares have come back to haunt you. But it’s not acne – it could be another form of rosacea called Papulopustular Rosacea. Sounds delightful doesn’t it!
But there’s another kind. What if the skin on your nose has become rough and lumpy so that it increases the size of your nose and makes it look a bit bulbous and deformed? Then you may be the proud owner of Phymatous Rosacea. I wouldn’t like to have this one. But wait! There is a treatment for it.
There is another form of rosacea called Ocular Rosacea, which is where the redness and inflammation affects your eyes. This can be quite dangerous and if not attended to, may lead to blindness.
You will find images of all the above rosacea symptoms in the header of this site. Do any of them look like you? If so, you should see a dermatologist and then educate yourself on how to prevent and manage your symptoms. One thing is important – you need to take good care of yourself. It may mean changing some of your previous habits but it will be well worth it.
