Castor Oil for Acne Rosacea

Have you ever thought about using castor oil for acne rosacea? Castor oil is one of those ‘wonder oils’ that is so naturally good for your skin while protecting it from infection and breakouts. Being rich in Ricinoleic acid, it fights off the bacteria behind acne breakouts. Not only so, but due to its ability to penetrate your skin layers more deeply than most other oils, it is able to attack your acne rosacea where it begins – in the dermis layer of your skin.

A Little About Your Skin

Our skin has three main layers. From outside to inside they are:- the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis.

The epidermis is where new skin cells are continually being generated, which work their way up to the top, by which time most of them are dead and are removed by washing etc.

The dermis is a thicker, inner layer of your skin where you’ll find connective tissue comprised of collagen and elastic fibres interwoven with blood vessels, hair follicles, sweat and oil glands and nerve receptors. This is where your body temperature is regulated – by increasing blood flow to the skin when you’re too hot and need to release the heat, or restricting it when you’re cold to keep you warm. The problem that rosaceans have, is that the blood flow is inappropriate for the conditions, causing flushing and inflammation.

How Castor Oil for Acne Rosacea Works

It is the dermis layer of your skin where infection begins. For acne sufferers, it starts with ‘stale’ oil from the sebaceous glands clogging up the hair follicle pores, so that bacteria has a nice breeding ground. The clogged pores are seen as ‘blackheads’ and when your immune system rushes to eliminate the bacteria, inflammation results, which you see as acne.

Acne rosacea is somewhat different to regular acne because the condition results directly from an oversupply of blood to the dermis layer of your skin. Blood capilliaries become enlarged there so that, rather than serving their purpose of nourishing the skin, they inflame it instead. This provides opportunity for any toxins in your blood and bacteria and microbes in your skin to connect. The warm flushing effect provides a good place for pathogens to breed – and so they do.

Castor oil is known for its ability to penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin than any other essential plant oil. The Ricinoleic acid attacks viruses, bacteria, molds and yeasts – and this is the primary reason why it works well on acne rosacea, not to mention a number of other skin ailments such as warts (including genital warts), ringworm, scars and fungal infections.

Castor oil provides a number of other benefits to your skin. The omega-6 fatty acids penetrate into the dermis layer, reducing the effects of ageing and maintaining skin elasticity by rejuvenating the collagen. It removes dry patches and hydrates the skin, leaving it soft and supple. Castor oil is thicker than other vegetable based oils – it almost has a sticky texture like honey. It helps heal scar tissue and is an effective disinfectant for open wounds. The fatty acids also reduce pigmentation by piercing the scar tissue and essentially pumping it out. It is also good for nourishing your hair (also helping it to appear darker) and for scalp problems.
