Best Moisturizer for Rosacea

If you suffer from this skin condition, then the best moisturizer for rosacea won’t be your regular over the counter ones. Fortunately, there are a number of moisturizers which have been developed specifically for rosacea sufferers and these contain the ingredients you need, like glycerin, mineral oil and shea butter.

So here’s a list of some of the best moisturizers for rosacea that I have found:

NeoStrata Facial Cleanser and Ultra Moisturizing Face Cream

NeoStrata Facial Cleanser is promoted as “soap-free, hypoallergenic facial cleanser that gently exfoliates without drying the skin.” The facial cleanser contains 4% Gluconolactone

NeoStrata Ultra Moisturizing Face Cream is described as “Sensitive skin and first time AHA users can gently exfoliate and moisturize the skin while reducing the signs of aging with this emollient cream.” The Moisturizing Cream contains 10% Gluconolactone.

What is a Gluconolactone?

Gluconolactone is the name of an ingredient known as PHA. PHA stands for Poly Hyrdroxy Acid. Wikipedia tells us that Gluconalactone, also known as `Glucono delta-lactone’ is additionally known as the food additive E575. It has many uses including “sequestrant, an acidifier, or a curing, pickling, or leavening agent”.

Bionect improves Rosacea Symptoms

A recent paper in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology suggests that Bionect may be helpful for the symptoms of rosacea.

The study found that after 4 weeks the burning or stinging and dryness of rosacea was much improved, while papules and redness were also improved.

What is Bionect?

Bionect is a prescription only cream, gel and spray that contains the active ingredient hyaluronic acid sodium salt 0.2%. The active ingredient is also styled as Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid (LMW-HA).

The publicy for Bionect say that it is `Ideal for Managing Redness, Inflammation & Discomfort Associated with Irritations of the Skin’.

Bionect Cream Ingredients

Hyaluronic acid sodium salt (Hyalastine), polyethyleneglycol 400 monostearate, decyl ester of oleic acid, emulsifying wax, glycerol, sorbitol solution 70%, sodium dehydroacetate, methylparaben, propylparaben, fragrance, purified water.

Washing Your Face

Washing your face may seem like such a simple activity that highlighting it may feel unnecessary. For rosacea sufferers though, we know that a gentle skin care regime is important. Starting your rosacea-beating regime with an irritating cleanse is simply going to make your skin much harder to manage.

Washing your face is as simple as using soap and water, right? Not quite say dermatologists. How you wash your face can make a difference in your appearance.

For healthier-looking skin, Dr. Rohrer recommends people follow these tips to keep their face looking healthy:

  1. Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser that does not contain alcohol.
  2. Wet your face with lukewarm water and use your fingertips to apply cleanser. Using a washcloth, mesh sponge or anything other than your fingertips can irritate your skin.
  3. Resist the temptation to scrub your skin as scrubbing irritates the skin.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water, and pat dry with a soft towel.
  5. Apply moisturizer if your skin is dry or itchy. Be gentle when applying any cream around your eyes so you do not pull too hard on this delicate skin.
  6. Limit washing to twice a day and after sweating.Wash your face once in the morning and once at night as well as after sweating heavily. Perspiration, especially when wearing a hat or helmet, irritates the skin. Wash your skin as soon as possible after sweating.

How often do you wash your face?

There isn’t any exclusion described for extra oily skin. I wonder if you find this useful advice – only sweating is listed as being irritating enough to require immediate removal.

Lukewarm Water and Fingertips

Is the temptation to use a washcloth too strong for you to resist? Rosacea skin can be easily irritated, but what about that extra sticky makeup or sunscreen?

Always use a Moisturizer

Again this hint may at first appear obvious, but it was a good find for me, especially as a male. Does anyone think that they can get away without a moisturizer ?

I would add to this list, especially coming from a climate with many hours or strong sunlight each day that rosacea sufferers should always use a sunscreen.

Are ‘Blemish Balm’ Creams The Best Moisturizer for Rosacea?

What is a BB Cream?

Perhaps better known to the Asian beauty market, Blemish Balm (BB) Creams are somewhat similar to a tinted moisturiser, perhaps also including some sun protection. Some formulations, especially so in Asian markets may additionally contain skin whitening agents.

I’m sure all rosacea sufferers would like to think that there is a simple cream that could treat their rosacea as merely some kind of blemish and just `balm it away’.

There doesn’t seem to any hard rules about what a BB Cream can contain. Further, there seems to be many products on the market that claim to be some kind of blemish balm. Sadly this means that finding a BB Cream that works well for rosacea in general, is probably going to be a difficult task.

What About an Alternative?

Those wanting to try a BB Cream, but concerned about regular cosmetic line ingredients may want to try a tinted moisturiser.
